Beautiful Sunday Night

5.6 happy miles!!! I took my time and they were slooooooow, but it was most importantly...a pain-free run! I even ran up a serious quarter-mile hill and didn't walk the entire time. All in all, a great move in the right direction.

Do we have a shirt color picked out? I want to place my order soon...

Finally!

3 miles logged today, and they felt okay! I made it through, slower than I would have like, but pain-free.

Tomorrow it's a 10K, I'm going to try to participate in the "Human Race" because I like the idea. Not sure how I'll do, and I have a bail-out point at 4.5 miles if anything hurts.

Time to go through more stuff for school, with my feet up and a glass of wine!

Getting old sucks

Completed 5 miles last night on the treadmill, painful. I was supposed to run 1 mile warm up, 3 miles @ 10:00 pace, 1 mile cool down. Disappointingly, I couldn't make it through 3 miles at 10:00 pace. I had to slow down to 11 & 12 minute speeds. Happy to have completed the mileage, but wishing it could have been faster.

Running the treadmill was horrible, although it was a pretty cool treadmill - instead of being 1 single piece of material making up the moving walkway part it was a bunch of individual horizontal slats of rubber. Probably intended to decrease the impact on joints or something.

My body feels horrible, everything aches. I get sharp shooting pain in my joints out of nowhere. I've eaten as many bananas as I can tolerate, but still cramp up. I feel old. And I'm starting to get scared of the hills...

On a high note, it's a three day weekend! Hallelujah! Gotta get 6 miles in either tomorrow or Sunday. Gonna try and run them at the Quabbin Reservoir, because it's gorgeous and only slightly hilly. Enjoy the weekend!

Will Run for Margaritas

Love it! Now I'm torn between that shirt and the one in the picture to the right! Lauren, you are so right about running being an excuse to spend money. I don't think I've bought much else in the past month aside from running stuff. I did ask for new shorts for my birthday, so my brother hooked me up with two pair, which is awesome.

Did a short, but painful, two mile run last night. I was really happy that my legs felt good after the long run on Sunday. Well, they felt good until I started running again!

I am really looking forward to this weekend, 3 whole days and we have NO plans! That makes me so excited. It's been a rough couple of days and I need some down time to get my act together.

Lauren - congrats on the new position, that sounds really exciting!

Running is an excuse to spend money

Jackie, that's awesome!!! You're doing great and you're right, there is nothing like new sneaks to perk up a run.

I got a new pair on Sunday night but running was torture for me. I was achy and my legs felt like lead. I'm going to chalk it up to a couple of days of driving and being tired and hope that tonight's run will be better. Last week's total was 9.5 miles and a 3 mile hike in Acadia. Lots of hill training because the roads along the bay were all hills...so good training for Conway

The onemoremile site seems to be working fine, I checked it out this morning. Best part...they have new slogans! Will Run for Coffee, WRF Ice Cream and WRF Margaritas are among the new shirts I noticed. I think that all getting the same color shirt with our own slogans would be a great idea, as Jackie suggested. Now....time to pick a color! I have a raspberry tank so I'd vote for anything that isn't pink (surprise, I know.) The iris and cadet blue are both tempting?

On a happy, non-running note, I'm starting a new job at our middle school! I'll be doing 7th and 8th grade chorus mostly with a little bit of band thrown in to keep me on my toes. It's a great opportunity for me and I'm looking forward to the challenge of doing something new. I think I really need the change to keep me fresh and interested! The best part of the new job is that I don't start until 9am so I'll have time to run in the mornings...woo hoo!

Off to school to set-up and clean-up....depending on what classroom I'm in!

29 year old runner

Well, ladies, for the 1st time in my life, at the age of 29, I ran 5 miles! I was pretty proud of myself yesterday, and actually don't feel half bad today. Ran a nice flat route on the bike path that starts behind our development. It's not paved, so it's a mix of sand & gravel - with some parts being pretty hard packed dirt and other parts being pretty loose sand. It was more of a challenge on my ankles than anything else - but I finished, so I was happy!

I also scored some new running gear. Don's dad sent me some birthday money (love him!), so I used it to get a running skirt & a new pair of sneakers. After 3 years of wearing solely Asics Gel Kayanos, I am now the proud owner of a pair of Nike Vomeros. I ran 5 miles in them yesterday right out of the box and LOVED IT! What a huge difference. As I mentioned below I had been running in stability shoes for over-pronators, but it turns out I actually have a pretty neutral foot w/ a high arch and these shoes are perfect. My ankles felt a lot more stable on the run yesterday than usual and I think my old sneaks were causing me to roll to the outside more than I naturally do. Anyway, I'm thrilled with my purchase! They are so bouncy and cushiony!

Jumping up to 13 miles this week (10 last week), with a 5 mile "tempo run" mid-week and a 6 mile long run over the weekend. I have a customer in town this week, making for long, tiring days, but I'm really motivated now and can't wait to get my miles in.

See you on the road!

Mini me!

So in case I didn't mention it, I broke down and bought the Nike+ Sportband. I felt 3.5 weeks of consistent running was enough to justify the $60 purchase. It is SOO cool!

Anyway, the whole thing is run via the nike+ website, which is actually pretty cool itself. They have a feature where you can build your own Nike+ Mini, here's mine: Mini+

She's fun, and she broadcasts how long it's been since my last run! Too fun... =) Have a great weekend, ladies!

Redemption

Last night was an "easy run" according to my training schedule, but I wasn't so sure going into it. I planned on hitting the same 3 mile route that kicked my butt only 2 weeks ago (I ended up walking about 1/2 of the last 1.5 miles). It's a straight out and back down route 181, slight hill the whole length of the route. Downhill on the way out, up hill on the way back.

I felt redeemed last night, I ran the entire route plus an extra loop in my development without a problem. I was exhausted when I finished, and I didn't have anything left to give, but I was happy to have completed it strong.

Five miles left to complete week 4 on Saturday. I'm hoping to run at Rockland Lake, which I believe to be relatively flat. Wish me luck in finishing! (my training plan also lists this as an "easy run," yeah right! "Long Runs" don't start until next week at 6 miles)

Under Over

Lots of thoughts running through my head tonight, but I'll start with my first week 4 training run tonight of 2 miles. It felt great to finish the intended distance. Eventhough I've been finishing this route since week 1 it still felt a bit redeeming after Saturday's disappointing 4. I also hooked Kali up to a leash that adjusts to clip around my waist, leaving my hands free, which was AWESOME! Additional motivation will be derived from finishing this week and a whole month of consistent running - yea!

I was flipping through my recent RunnersWorld magazine and rested on the shoe review section and as always I looked at the overpronation/stability shoe section. But then, for the 1st time ever, I looked at the wear pattern on my sneaks and was really surprised that they indicated that I actually under pronate and w/ my high arches I should be looking for a neutral cushioning shoe. Does this mean the stability running shoe I've gone to solely for the last 4 years (Asics Gel Kayano) is not right for me??? It's probably time for some new kicks, if not now definitely after this round of training, so I'll have to re-evaluate. Maybe I'll even go somewhere that knows how to fit running shoes. My knees have been killing me, so I might go get some inserts for the time being.

Last but not least, this weekend's long run is a 5 miler. It's safe to say I've never run 5 miles before. The race last year doesn't count, because I walked. And with this past weekend's inconsistent run I'm already worried about this one. I'm hoping to find a relatively flat loop that will allow me to log the miles at least as a run / jog. I will be in NY this weekend, so maybe I'll hit Rockland Lake - how long is that once around?

Buenas Noches!

Training Week 3 - Complete

Finished my 9 mile week off w/ a 4 mile long run today. It certainly had it's ups and downs.

The positives included awesome weather, a perfect training loop and feeling guilt free about having some ice cream tonight! The negatives - I was really frustrated that I wasn't able to run the whole thing, my body just isn't there yet. I couldn't catch my breath, my legs couldn't hack it, all in all it was not a stellar 4 mile run. I was also concerned for my personal saftey on the last mile which I ran on 181, it just didn't seem that safe with minimal extra space on the road to run in.

Bummer about the Conway 5K, but I'm okay w/ leaving it sort of up in the air for a while. I don't think it will be an issue to sign up for the Sturbridge one at the last minute, and I think it works out great that it's on the same day - so we know we'll be running one or the other.

Enjoy your weekends ladies!

Olympic 10K

Which they call the 10,000 meter....does that make it sound longer? I think so!

The woman who won ran 6.2 miles in 29:54!!!!!

Festival Update....

So the Conway website now has the Friday night Covered Bridge dinner posted and Sunday is listed as TBA. I never heard back from the people I e-mailed and I'm guessing it's because it's not set yet. Hopefully it'll still happen.

No running for me this morning, I'm feeling a little achy and will try to get to the gym later today. Better safe than hurt again...but I'm just feeling a little down. :(

Ugh...

Okay, so I made it through 5.5 yesterday, but it was supposed to be 6. I'm just not running the way I want to and I'm frustrated!!! It took forever and just didn't feel good the way I'm used to. This recovery thing and re-training totally sucks!!!

It also takes me a while to recover. I was scheduled for a 2 miler today and I couldn't get out there. My shins were achy so I decided that safe was better than sorry (and lazy). But...new shoes are on their way which should help that.

Gotta get to the gym tomorrow and a long run (8?) scheduled for Saturday morning. I'm gonna head to Rockland Lake for 2 laps around the outside to get some hills in with the training....the fun never ends!

Thoughts from a highly caffeinated Jakesmahoney

The race in Sturbridge is a 5k and 10k, the 10k is just twice around the route. If we signed up for that one would it be more motivating for you COB if you can sign up for the 5k and LCH and I can run the 10? Then we're all out there, but it's less stressful from a training perspective. Just a thought. I'd rather do that than run the other with you on the sidelines!

Undecided

So no surprise that I've been finding it very difficult to incorporate a training program into my routine. No excuses, but I've just found my time sucked up by the house, work and in large part, commuting. I'm not quite willing to say I'll be the cheerleader this time around, but that may be the case if I'm not able to find a better balance soon. :-(

Lone thought for the night

My dog is never happier than when I lace up my sneakers and she sees me pick up her leash.

Training Week 2 - Complete (sort of)

Great job, Lauren! Sounds like your logging lots of miles, the speed will come!

To explain the "sort of" above - I skipped a 2 mile run this week, I didn't plan very well and figured as long as I got the long run in I'd be okay. Well, today was a 3 mile run - longest I've run since the race last year, and I regretted missing the 2. At this point I need all the miles I have time for! Anyway, finally broke out of our development and hit the main road. Again, went out too fast and died in the 2nd half. Turns out the out 1.5 mile is a nice subtle decline, so I was moving pretty well. But, as you guessed it that means the 1.5 back is a painful, subtle hill.

Ran w/ Don today, he kicked my butt. Saved his energy on the way out and sped past me on the way back. He drives me nuts, he only runs about 50% of what I run and he still kicks my butt. Imagine if he trained 100%!

I'll check out the website for shirts. =)

Chris - you still hanging in with us or you gonna' be cheering us on come Oct???

Enjoy the week ladies, I'm logging 8 miles this week (no skipping!!!).

Week 3 Complete

I love the idea of matching shirts! There's a great company that I buy stuff from we could look at. www.onemoremilerunning.com I'm fan of "Does this shirt make my butt look fast?" I already have Will Run for Wine and Stress Relief in Progress. I know, I'm nuts.

I've just completed week 3 of my training and while I don't seem to have a problem completing the mileage, I'm frustrated with time. I'm so much slower than I was last year and I have to put some concentrated effort towards working on quickness during my weekday runs. If you're interested in my personal insanity, here's my training program, courtesy of runnersworld. This week I finished 14-15 miles and got to the gym once, too.

Is anyone else finding Olympics inspiring? I'll admit that it got me up and out this morning when my bed was REALLY comfortable. Thinking about what so many of these athletes have given up, sacrificed and an appreciation of their hard work is something I found motivating this morning.

Okay, shower time!

Thursday a.m.

Morning ladies, I have been unsuccessfully playing around with the blog this morning trying to add a picture of us and it's just not working out! I "granted" you both admin rights, so you should both now be able to add pictures or change the layout or whatever you'd like! Does anyone have a picture of us from last year's race?

Ran 2 miles last night, went out a little too fast and the hill was a killer. I was impatient, I only had about 30 min before it got dark out, so I was running a bit faster than last week and felt myself get winded much earlier.

Does anyone else ever hear their stomach juices "swashing" around while they're running? I know that sounds weird, but I can hear it sometimes clear as a bell if I haven't eaten in a few hours and it totally freaks me out.

Oh, you'll notice a small change from the dark background to the light - this felt more "summery" to me!

Ciao!

Training week 1 - COMPLETE

After an "easy" 2 mile run yesterday my first week of training is officially complete. 6 miles total. Based on my training plan I'm slowly working my way up to a max distance of 15 miles a week in weeks 8 and 9.

I like the idea of only running 3 days a week, it doesn't seem too overwhelming to my schedule, and allows for plenty of rest between runs. Next week looks like another easy week to get me back in the swing of things - 2 miles on Tuesday & Thursday, 3 mi on Sunday.

I have been running sans iPod this week and am finding it quite enjoyable. I have no doubt that on some of the longer runs in the coming weeks that I'll need the entertainment and motivation, but my running mix is getting boring and I'm happier w/out it for now.

On another note, Don has tentatively committed to running this years 10k with us. He has also completed week 1 of training.

If Delaware wasn't such a long drive from MA I would totally be up for a weekend away. I'll keep it in mind, as I do love a good road trip, but I can't commit.

Happy Monday ladies!

p.s. I think we should get matching shirts for the race!

Back in NY

So...when the humidity is 90% I don't recommend running! That was my Monday morning greeting from DE and I struggled through my 3 miles. There was walking and just general exhaustion. I made up for it by sitting at the beach and pool for the rest of the day.

Tuesday I went to the gym and did the elliptical and my mom ran outside. I think she had the same run I did on Monday...ugh! Wednesday we didn't run or work out outside of beach walking...slackers, I know. I read 3 books in 3 days which was a gift to myself of a whole different kind. I think sometimes I focus too much on how hard I'm working myself to get results and sometimes it's about stepping back and just myself enjoy time off. I know I've been on vacay for a month but these were the first days where I can say I really felt relaxed. ME in 2 weeks...lobsters and running combined!

I hit the gym this morning and have to share. There's a machine that looks sort of like an elliptical and a stairclimber in one and it's the best workout ever. I felt wiped out after a 30 minute "hill program" and it's the first machine that really feels like hills! It's a Cybex of some kind...no machine title or anything that I could fine, but it's my new love.

Now, this is way longer than I'd intended but I noticed that there's a race in DE on Sept. 21st. It's a 5K/10K and could be a fun training run if anyone's interested. The 5 of us (I'm including Don and Mike) could go down and stay at the condo if you'd like. It's sponsered by Dogfish Head so give it a look. www.dogfish.com

6 miles tomorrow...wish me luck!
